Portfolio Planning Tools In our recent study, "The provision of investment advice", we looked at the use of portfolio planning tools. Whilst the majority of advisers said that they used toolsets, on further questioning, it turned out that many had only tried them once or twice; indeed, we estimate that less than a quarter of advisers use planning tools with any regularity. Another finding was that specialist advisers either use their own products (Bloomsbury, Bestinvest) or do not use toolsets at all, on the grounds that none were of adequate quality. These findings are in contrast to much that has appeared in the trade press recently. In view of concern over the ability of advisers to demonstrate competence to offer investment advice, it is important that the industry has a good understanding of needs in the area of toolsets, from the highly sophisticated investment adviser to the young consultant employed by the major distributor and all in between.
